STAFFORDSHIRE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH - ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The annual conference for Staffordshire Neighbourhood Watch will take place on Saturday 14th October, from 1000-1600, at Yarnfield Park Conference Centre near Stone. This is open to all Neighbourhood Watch members - there is no charge, and lunch is provided. It will include presentations from the assistant chief constable, scenes of crime officers and Trading Standards. This is always a very interesting and informative day. If you would like to attend, please contact Rob Nunn, as soon as possible on 01785 234576 or by email (Robert.Nunn@staffordshire.pnn.police.uk ) and he will send you a registration form. Thankyou.

WHAT IS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ?

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are based on the concept of being a good Neighbour.

The principals are simple.

Neighbours are encouraged to join together to keep a watch on each others property and to report any suspicious people and/or happenings to the Police.

Neighbourhood Watch Members are encouraged to place special emphasis on the adoption and implementation of Crime Prevention Measures.

Neighbourhood Watch has both Local and National Associations and is fully supported by the Police.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEMES LEAD TO A GREATER SHARED AWARENESS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC, WHICH LEADS TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY AND THE PRACTICAL STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO TACKLE THE PROBLEMS.

THE AIMS OF NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH :

  1. To reduce crime and the fear of crime
  2. To develop a community sprit amongst the people that live in an area covered by a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
  3. To enhance the relationship between the public and the Police, by working in partnership.
  4. To encourage the NW Members to help themselves, by helping the Police in the prevention and detection of crime.

To set up a network of  Group, Area & Key Co-ordinators so that every household can be covered by a visible and active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING TO A VISIBLE AND ACTIVE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEME ?

  1. It has been proven to act as a deterrent against criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.
  2. It should reduce the fear of crime.
  1. You will get to know your neighbours better and look out for each other.
  2. Some Insurance Companies offer a discount to NW Members.

DOES IT WORK ?

Yes

Neighbourhood Watch members in active schemes, who follow crime prevention advice, are 68 times less likely to be a burglary victim.

Insurance industry statistics show that houses in active Neighbourhood Watch schemes have a 1 in 344 chance of being burgled compared to a national average of 1 in 20 if you are not in a scheme..

However those members who follow crime prevention advice, in putting the correct locks on their windows and doors etc. reduce the chance of being burgled to 1 in 1350.

Most insurance companies give discounts on premiums for home insurance to members of schemes.
IT’S FREE – although a small contribution maybe required for the initial cost of the street signs and copying etc.
The Police, insurance companies, government and local councils support Neighbourhood Watch
Street co-ordinators receive warning messages of criminal activity in your area via an automated message system - WatchOUT - via phone or fax or email.

Lichfield and Chasetown Policing units have a full time Neighbourhood Watch Support Worker (Robert Nunn) Rob’s main function is to liase between the Police and NW Members. This is mainly done through the computerised messaging service ‘Watch-Out’. Rob also compiles Area News Letters and generally promotes Neighbourhood Watch.
